Being Busy

There’s a common safe place for us entrepreneurs: it’s called ‘being busy’.

We’re supposed to give you a pass because you are full on. All day. You frantically move from one thing to the next, never pausing to catch a breath, you skipped lunch and now you’re exhausted. The problem is that there are no points awarded for busy. Nor profits either. Two of my group have anointed themselves as ‘The Two-Thirds  Gang’ because, month after month, they each get two-thirds of their  commitments done. That doesn’t actually work out at two-thirds of the goals achieved (if it did we could probably live with that.) No, two-thirds of the commitments done means that the really big stuff – the important things that drive meaningful change – are getting missed.

Why?

Because they are too busy. One member had a commitment from a previous meeting to contact UKTI. This is the government department that runs trade missions to the country that she’s trying to promote her business into. She returned to the  meeting SIX WEEKS later and professed to the group that she had been ‘too busy’ to make that single phone call. In six weeks. Bonkers doesn’t come close. It’s rubbish. But this isn’t about her. It’s about you. There are no points for busy. No additional profit comes, per se, from you being busy. Points and profit come from successful prioritisation. Points and profit come from YOU being efficient and properly productive. (And I promise you that you are in control of both. You’re the boss, remember. You get to choose) Points and profit come from doing the work that matters – which is usually different from the work that’s in front of you. Points and profit come from making sure that you don’t just serve others but that you find chunks of time each week to serve yourself. To build that future you say you want.  There are no points for busy.

Grow up. Smell the coffee. Get real.

Prioritisation, productivity and efficiency are the watchwords to get your earnings where you want them to be this year. Success isn’t an accident you know…

BUSY IS NOT THE POINT.

Serve others but make sure that you find chunks of time each week to serve yourself. To build that future you say you want.

There are no points for busy.
